Organizations and associations are there to greatly help us get to understand a we're in... I found SCBWI, The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, beneficial for me... here's what I learned...
The SCBWI, Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators supplies a great many opportunities for those of us who love the thought of writing for children. Creating a difference within their lives through our experiences and ability to share with the stories that catch their attention.
I recently joined this group of active writers and illustrators and have discovered them quite open and available. They've a newsletter filled up with details about the children's book industry.
They've events throughout the year which further educating writers that can attend. I found they are informative and the networking that can be done worth every minute of it. I met dozens of book designers and editors and other authors that furthered my understanding of the industry.
I discovered the categories that children's books are divided up into.
I learned there is an alternative age bracket language that will be used.
I discovered industry specific names for the several types of characters and type of writing and that the illustrations really can move the book to importance, that the illustrator is a critical element of a books success.
That lots of the publishing houses have illustrators they prefer to use and that the partnership between all three parties involved is the main part of portfolio of published books.
The hours spent, the revisions made, sometimes almost complete rewrites ... all involve the cooperation of the editor, writer and illustrator. The end product is just a testament to their collaborative skills.
Knowing how and where to promote your skills is important to your books success and as previously mentioned about, organizations help you will find the way. There are lots of several types of organizations for authors, The Publishers Marketing Association is one of the biggest and has local chapters in certain areas. Also the National Speakers Association offers multiple events and information for authors who're also looking to complete speaking. I am aware there are many I'm sure in the event that you did a seek out author or writer associations or organizations you'll find some that'll suite your needs and location.
